Overview
I was hired for this project at the University of Florida to contribute to the SHINE initiative, which explores how immersive environments can foster emotional and cognitive engagement with climate change education. For this project, I was specifically responsible for creating the Florida springs environment in Unreal Engine.
To build this environment, I used Quixel Megascans, external 3D assets, and custom modeling, including a staircase. I applied landscaping tools, the experimental water plugin, and lighting systems to capture the ecological character of the springs. Guided by a narrative designer’s storyboard, I implemented in-game cameras and produced cinematic sequences that convey the story of environmental change. I am also working on adapting these sequences for VR viewing, ensuring the experience is immersive and accessible.
This environment will be paired with ecopoetry that narrates the degradation of the springs over time. During these combined experiences, EEG technology will be used to track participants’ brainwave activity, measuring attention, emotional resonance, and memory retention. By synchronizing immersive visuals with poetry, SHINE tests how art and technology together can deepen ecological awareness and foster pro-environmental attitudes more effectively than traditional learning methods.
